Nine ejections and postgame brawls marred Kansas’ historic upset over the defending champions, turning a high-stakes quarterfinal into a chaotic battleground before the Elam Ending finish.

Emotions Boil Over as JHX Hoops Advances Past AfterShocks in TBT Quarterfinal

JHX Hoops' biggest win in program history was overshadowed by multiple on-court altercations Monday night at Charles Koch Arena.

The Kansas alumni defeated defending champion AfterShocks 64-59 to advance to The Basketball Tournament semifinals, but the quarterfinal featured nine in-game ejections and another fight following Frank Mason III's game-winning 3-pointer in the Elam Ending.

The first incident occurred late in the second quarter when AfterShocks forward Rashard Kelly and JHX Hoops guard Mario Chalmers became tangled while battling for a rebound. Kelly shoved Chalmers to the floor, sparking a bench-clearing confrontation that halted play for nearly 20 minutes.

Tournament officials ejected Kelly and Chalmers with Flagrant 2 fouls and also disqualified every player who left the bench. Four AfterShocks players, Morris Udeze, Chaunce Jenkins, Q.J. Peterson and James Woodard, were ejected along with JHX Hoops' Jamari Traylor, Kevin Young and Tra'Deon Hollins, leaving each team with only six available players for the remainder of the game.

Despite the reduced rotations, the teams continued to exchange leads throughout the second half. Another brief shoving match occurred in the third quarter before JHX Hoops closed out the defending champions in the Elam Ending behind 25 points from Zeke Mayo and Mason's decisive 3-pointer.

The tension carried into the postgame celebration.

Video from the arena showed AfterShocks guard Marcus Keene shoving JHX Hoops guard Jacob Hanna during the celebration, leaving Hanna bloodied after colliding with a nearby spectator. Additional confrontations broke out across the floor before players and coaches were separated by security.

The AfterShocks organization issued a public apology Tuesday, saying the incident did not reflect the program's standards of professionalism, sportsmanship and respect. Wichita State also released a statement condemning the violence while noting that the event was operated by The Basketball Tournament and remains under review.

Despite the incidents, JHX Hoops is expected to have its full roster available for Wednesday's semifinal against Kentucky alumni team La Familia in Lexington. Tournament officials ruled Monday's ejections applied only to the remainder of the quarterfinal.
