Recap On the Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs the Pittsburgh Steelers
Former Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels had a difficult afternoon against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, throwing two interceptions as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell 26-19 in overtime at Raymond James Stadium.
Making another start in place of injured veteran Baker Mayfield, Daniels helped Tampa Bay build a 16-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter. However, Pittsburgh rallied late, taking advantage of costly turnovers to erase the deficit before securing the victory in overtime.
Daniels finished the game completing 22 of 43 passes for 164 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He also contributed 39 rushing yards on four carries, using his mobility to extend plays and pick up important yards when the pocket broke down. The official Buccaneers game recap detailed the former Jayhawk's performance in the loss.
The game began with a promising defensive effort from Tampa Bay, which forced Pittsburgh to struggle offensively during the opening half. Daniels and the Buccaneers capitalized on the opportunity, putting together a second-quarter scoring drive that ended with a two-yard touchdown reception by Emeka Egbuka.
Daniels helped move the offense down the field during that possession, completing passes to keep the drive alive. Tampa Bay added field goals to build its advantage, appearing to be in control for much of the afternoon.
However, the fourth quarter changed everything.
With the Buccaneers trying to protect their lead, Daniels threw an interception intended for Egbuka. Pittsburgh turned the takeaway into points, beginning its comeback and putting pressure on Tampa Bay's offense.
Another interception, this time by former Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean, proved especially costly. Dean returned the ball 40 yards to the Tampa Bay three-yard line, setting up a Pittsburgh field goal that gave the Steelers a late lead.
Daniels nevertheless showed resilience by leading the Buccaneers into field-goal range in the final seconds. Chase McLaughlin converted from 53 yards to tie the game at 19 and send it to overtime.
Pittsburgh took control in the extra period, driving down the field before Aaron Rodgers connected with Germie Bernard for the winning touchdown. Daniels got one final opportunity but was sacked by Jalen Ramsey on fourth down, ending Tampa Bay's comeback hopes.
According to NBC Sports, Daniels also took five sacks, losing 42 yards on those plays. The pressure made an already challenging afternoon more difficult for the rookie quarterback. Jayhawks Roundtable
