Jayhawks zero in on the explosive scoring threat of Dominique Daniels Jr., devising a strategy to contain his speed and shot-making prowess.
How Will Kansas Men's Basketball Stop Cal Baptist Star Dominique Daniels Jr.?
When the Kansas Jayhawks began preparing for their NCAA Tournament opener, the focus quickly shifted away from their own star power and onto one clear priority — slowing down Dominique Daniels Jr.
The senior guard has been one of the most productive scorers in the country, averaging 23.2 points per game, and presents a unique challenge compared to others Kansas has faced this season. At 5-foot-10 with a strong frame and burst, Daniels combines speed, balance and shot-making ability in a way that stresses defenses on every possession.
Kansas coach Bill Self didn’t overcomplicate the scouting report.
“He’s good,” Self said. “And he can score on anybody, any level. He’s capable of getting 30, 35 any night.”
Daniels’ speed and versatility stand out. He is just as comfortable attacking the rim, where over 40% of his shots come, as he is creating his own perimeter looks. More than half of his three-point makes this season have come unassisted, highlighting his ability to generate offense without help.
That combination presents a difficult decision for Kansas defensively: apply pressure and risk getting beat off the dribble, or sag back and allow clean looks.
“He is so downhill,” Self said. “His speed and strength and shiftiness makes it hard to switch, makes it hard to hedge without being split.”
Kansas guards Elmarko Jackson and Melvin Council Jr. will likely take the bulk of the defensive assignment on Daniels.
Part of Kansas’ preparation has come from within its own scout team. Graduate guard Nginyu Ngala has taken on the role of simulating Daniels in practice, using his own similar build and quickness to replicate the downhill pressure Kansas expects to see.
Still, Self acknowledged the challenge of fully recreating Daniels’ impact.
“We basically told them, if he gets a shot off, it’s not good enough,” Self said.
Ultimately, Kansas’ defensive plan centers on limiting clean touches and forcing Daniels into difficult attempts. Whether that approach holds up will determine how the No. 4 seed fares against Cal Baptist Lancers in tonight’s first-round matchup at Viejas Arena. Tipoff is set for 8:45 p.m. Central on CBS.
