A preseason statement resurfaces as Bill Self contemplates his future, facing a familiar question after another early tournament exit.
Bill Self weighs future after early exit, preseason comment adds context
As Kansas’ season ended Sunday, Bill Self struck a familiar tone. Reflective, measured and noncommittal. But a comment from earlier this year now adds a new layer to the conversation.
Following a 67-65 loss to St. John’s in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Self said he will take time to evaluate his future, emphasizing family and health as key factors.
“I’ll get back and get with family and see what’s going on,” Self said. “I love what I do. I need to be able to do it where I’m feeling good and healthy. I’ll get back home and it’ll all be discussed.”
Self did not indicate whether he is leaning toward returning or stepping away, but his uncertainty comes after a season that, by Kansas standards, fell short.
The Jayhawks finished 24-11 and failed to reach the NCAA Tournament’s second weekend for the fourth straight year, an uncommon stretch under Self.
That makes a preseason comment from the Hall of Fame coach particularly notable.
“I won’t even consider going out on a down year,” Self told CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish before the season. “That’s not even a consideration.”
Whether this season qualifies as a “down year” is subjective, but Kansas’ early exit and inconsistency throughout the season raise the question.
The Jayhawks showed flashes, including a late comeback Sunday that nearly erased a 14-point deficit, but struggled to find sustained offensive rhythm and consistency against top competition.
Self has dealt with multiple health concerns in recent years, including a heart procedure in 2023 and additional treatment last summer. He also missed time during the 2025-26 season, though he said Sunday he feels “as good as I’ve felt in a long time.” As Self gets older, a big question looms over the future of the program.
If Self were to step away, Kansas would face one of the most significant transitions in program history. Assistant coach and former NBA head coach Jacque Vaughn is widely viewed as a potential successor, given his ties to the program. For now, though, Self is not ready to make that call.
