Isaiah Marshall’s Development Through the First Part of the Season
Isaiah Marshall’s development has been one of the biggest storylines for Kansas football through the first part of the season.
After earning the starting quarterback job, Marshall entered the season with plenty of expectations. The redshirt freshman was asked to take control of the Jayhawks’ offense and provide consistency at a position that has been closely watched throughout the offseason.
Marshall showed flashes of what he can bring during Kansas’ season opener against LIU. He completed 14 of 19 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns before giving way to Cole Ballard. Marshall also showed confidence in the pocket and demonstrated an ability to make plays down the field.
One of his biggest strengths has been his willingness to spread the ball around. Kansas has several talented weapons at wide receiver and tight end, and Marshall has shown that he is capable of getting those players involved rather than relying on one target.
His connection with wide receiver Nik McMillan has been especially important. McMillan had a strong performance against LIU, and Marshall’s ability to find him helped create explosive plays for the Jayhawks.
However, Marshall’s early-season development has also included some difficult moments. Against Missouri, he struggled to consistently move the offense and threw an interception while Kansas was driving into Missouri territory. The Jayhawks eventually lost the game 38-21, making it an important learning experience for the young quarterback.
That game showed some of the areas Marshall still needs to improve. His decision-making under pressure, consistency and ability to maintain offensive momentum will be important as Kansas moves deeper into the season.
The good news for Kansas is that Marshall has already demonstrated that he can make big plays. His arm strength gives the Jayhawks an opportunity to attack defenses vertically, while his athleticism gives the offense another option when a play breaks down.
Marshall also has the benefit of playing behind an experienced coaching staff. Lance Leipold and offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki have emphasized development and consistency, giving Marshall an opportunity to learn from both his successes and mistakes.
As the season continues, Marshall’s growth could have a major impact on Kansas. The Jayhawks have shown that they have playmakers around him, but the offense will need Marshall to continue becoming more comfortable in the starting role.
The first part of the season has been a learning process for Marshall. There have been impressive throws, strong stretches and mistakes that the young quarterback can learn from.
For Kansas, the goal will be to see whether Marshall can turn those early flashes into consistent production. If he continues improving his decision-making and develops greater confidence in the offense, he could become an increasingly important part of what the Jayhawks want to accomplish this season.
