Newcomers impress as competition intensifies across the Kansas football roster. Coach Leipold praises rapid adaptation and burgeoning depth, signaling a stronger squad.

Kansas football spring update: Lance Leipold praises newcomers, competition rising across roster

Spring ball is still early, but Lance Leipold already likes what he’s seeing, especially from a roster that looks a lot different than it did a year ago.

The biggest takeaway? The newcomers aren’t behind.

Kansas brought in a large group of transfers and early enrollees this offseason, and instead of needing time to adjust, they’ve hit the ground running.

“I thought we’d have more bumps,” Leipold said. “But I’ve been very, very happy with how they’ve adapted.”

That’s not a small thing. With the portal moving as fast as it does now, getting players who can quickly buy in matters just as much as talent. Leipold pointed to their work ethic and attention to detail as early signs that this group fits. Across the board, competition is noticeably higher.

The secondary has added size and speed, something Kansas needed. The offensive line looks deeper, with Leipold saying the two-deep is stronger than last season. That kind of depth should matter once the physical part of the schedule hits. At quarterback, nothing is settled, and that’s by design.

Leipold made it clear that everything is being evaluated, from production to leadership. Both options have shown they can lead, but no decision is coming this spring. And don’t expect a two QB rotation.

“I think you have to let a guy get into the flow of the game,” Leipold said.

Skill positions are starting to take shape, too. Transfers like Nik McMillan have already flashed, especially with their ability to make contested plays. At tight end, there’s depth and versatility, which should give the offense flexibility.

One name to watch: freshman running back Kory Amachree. Leipold said he already looks physically ready and has the mindset to contribute early. It’s only spring practice, but the tone is clear. More competition and depth. And a group that looks comfortable a lot sooner than expected.
