Kansas Vs Pitt State Preview
The Kansas Jayhawks begin their 2026-27 basketball campaign Friday night when they host Pittsburg State in an exhibition matchup at Allen Fieldhouse. The 7 p.m. contest will give Kansas its first opportunity to compete against an outside opponent while providing fans a preview of a roster featuring returning veterans and highly regarded newcomers.
The game also serves as part of Late Night in the Phog, bringing a new format to Kansas’ traditional preseason event. Fans can watch the exhibition on ESPN+ as head coach Bill Self begins evaluating his team ahead of a demanding schedule.
One of the biggest storylines is the return of Tre White and Melvin Council Jr. Self announced that both players will suit up against Pittsburg State, but neither will start. Self explained that other players have spent more time with the team during the offseason, making it important to recognize that work as the Jayhawks establish their opening lineup. Their return should provide Kansas with additional experience, scoring and defensive versatility off the bench.
White averaged 13.5 points and 6.7 rebounds last season, while Council contributed 12.7 points, five rebounds and 5.1 assists per game. Their production could become important as Kansas works to find its offensive identity. Read more about their return in this WIBW report.
Another player to watch is Christian Reeves, who is expected to play after working through his offseason recovery. The 7-foot-2 center gives Kansas another option in the paint, and the exhibition will offer an opportunity to assess his conditioning, mobility and ability to contribute alongside the Jayhawks’ other big men.
Reeves’ availability matters as Kansas looks to develop frontcourt depth. His performance, along with that of Paul Mbiya, could help Self determine how to distribute minutes at center. Fans can review the complete team lineup on the official Kansas basketball roster.
Pittsburg State will provide an early test for a Kansas team still building chemistry. The Gorillas went 15-15 last season and are coached by former Jayhawk Jeff Boschee. Kansas holds a 14-0 advantage in the all-time series, including a 10-0 record in exhibition games, according to Kansas Athletics.
Although the result will not affect Kansas’ regular-season record, the game offers valuable preparation. Ball movement, defensive communication, rebounding and lineup combinations will all be worth monitoring.
With White, Council and Reeves available, Kansas fans will get an early look at how the roster could come together. Jayhawks Roundtable.
