The dual-threat playmaker edges out Cole Ballard to succeed Jalon Daniels, bringing explosive rushing ability to a Jayhawk offense entering a new era under Lance Leipold.
Kansas Names Isaiah Marshall Starting Quarterback Ahead Of 2026 Season
Kansas football has finally made its long-awaited quarterback decision.
After months of competition between redshirt sophomore Isaiah Marshall and redshirt junior Cole Ballard, the Jayhawks announced that Marshall will open the 2026 season as the team's starting quarterback.
The decision ends one of the biggest storylines of the offseason as Kansas prepares to move forward without longtime starter Jalon Daniels, who finished his career with 9,282 passing yards and 67 touchdowns before joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Marshall enters his third season in Lawrence but has very limited experience as a passer. He did not appear in a game during his first year with the program and threw just three passes for 28 yards last season.
Where Marshall stood out was on the ground.
He rushed for 160 yards in limited action and showed the type of athleticism that could add another dimension to Kansas' offense. His biggest moment came in the Jayhawks' 38-21 win over Oklahoma State, when he broke loose for a 43-yard run.
Ballard brought more experience into the competition, but Kansas coaches consistently maintained that the battle was legitimate throughout spring practice and fall camp.
Both quarterbacks received significant reps, and head coach Lance Leipold repeatedly indicated that both players could still see the field this season.
Associate head coach Andy Kotelnicki also praised the way Marshall and Ballard handled the competition.
"And I've said before in that room, when you have competition in that room, which is a really, really important room, of course, and our football team can see those two individuals handling it really, really well, and it's making both of them better," Kotelnicki said. "And no one can debate that. That's really healthy for a football team."
The healthy competition was also aided by a strong relationship between the two quarterbacks, something the coaching staff has highlighted throughout the offseason.
Now, Marshall gets the first opportunity to lead a Kansas offense that has been rebuilt around new playmakers and the return of Kotelnicki.
His first start will come Sept. 4 when Kansas hosts Long Island University at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.
