Marshall details his sharpened decision-making, newfound leadership, and growing receiver chemistry forged through consistent practice and intense quarterback competition.
Kansas QB Isaiah Marshall Embracing Competition, Showing Growth After Spring
Kansas quarterback Isaiah Marshall is approaching the offseason with a simple mindset: compete and improve.
“I’m just coming in trying to compete every day… just trying to get 1% better each day,” Marshall said.
That approach has led to steady development this spring, particularly in the finer details of his position.
“I would say just my dropbacks, just staying more calm in the backfield, making better decisions,” he said. “Just being a better quarterback overall.”
Marshall noted that after last season, the message from the coaching staff was clear.
“They just said it’s going to be a competition and we’re just going to compete,” he said.
Along with the open battle, coaches challenged him to elevate his leadership and consistency, areas he believes he’s already improving.
“Just being more of a leader and being more consistent, just trying to demand the huddle more,” Marshall said. “Yes sir, I have [seen growth].”
Spring ball also gave Marshall a chance to build chemistry with a revamped group of receivers, something he said has been a major positive.
“Nick makes plays when plays need to be made… great route running,” he said. “Nahzae is a big target, so if I put it anywhere, he’s going to go and grab the ball. I trust him.”
That trust didn’t happen overnight.
“We throw about two times a week, every single week since January,” Marshall said. “I think just doing that every single week kind of built trust.”
Marshall also pointed to the competitiveness within the quarterback room, highlighting what teammate QB Chase Jenkins brings to the table.
“Chase is a great player… he adds the explosiveness,” he said. “He can throw the ball good too.”
Overall, Marshall came away encouraged by how the spring unfolded as Kansas continues to piece things together offensively.
“I think it went good for me… we have a lot of good new guys,” he said. “We’re just getting better every single day.”
