As the Jayhawks navigate late-camp fatigue, coaching staff prioritizes situational execution and physical toughness to solidify the rotation before shifting focus to the regular season opener.
Lance Leipold Emphasizes Consistency As Kansas Wraps Up Fall Camp
Kansas head coach Lance Leipold likes where his team stands entering the final stretch of fall camp, but there is still plenty he wants cleaned up before the regular season begins.
Leipold said Kansas had reached the point in camp where some players were dealing with minor injuries and illnesses, creating challenges for units attempting to establish continuity. Still, he remained encouraged by the team's overall progress.
“You know, very pleased with where we're at right now,” Leipold said. “Still have plenty to work on.”
He added that fighting through the physical and mental demands late in camp was important for the Jayhawks as the coaching staff began narrowing down which players would see the most significant roles.
Consistency was one of Leipold's biggest priorities.
He pointed to execution, recognition, assignments and physicality as areas Kansas needed to continue improving. The coaching staff had intentionally challenged players with different formations, blitzes, coverages and pressure situations rather than simplifying practices.
“We need as many of these as we can get so game day becomes easier,” Leipold said.
Kansas also made situational football a larger emphasis during camp.
Leipold said he was pleased with the amount of 11-on-11 work the Jayhawks had completed and believed the added competitive situations would benefit the team once games began.
“Situational football is something we've really emphasized,” Leipold said. “And competitiveness in that, and I think our guys have responded well.”
The Jayhawks also adjusted their fall camp schedule to incorporate more days off, something Leipold believes helped players and staff remain fresher without sacrificing valuable practice time.
Kansas planned to finish camp before using the following week to simulate a typical in-season schedule ahead of game week.
With the opener approaching, Leipold's focus is now shifting from installing and evaluating to finding the consistency Kansas will need once the season begins.
