From breakout pass rusher Dak Brinkley to a revitalized Keaton Kubecka, discover the rising stars securing their spots in the Jayhawks' rotation ahead of the regular season.
Lance Leipold Highlights Several Kansas Football Players Emerging During Fall Camp
Kansas football entered fall camp with plenty of new faces and questions about which players would emerge into significant roles.
As the Jayhawks moved closer to the season, head coach Lance Leipold identified several players who had caught his attention.
One of the biggest standouts was defensive lineman David Santiago.
“David Santiago is a guy that has really kind of emerged to me,” Leipold said.
Earlier in the media session, Leipold went even further in his praise, saying Santiago had put together an “excellent camp” and would have an opportunity to make an impact for the Jayhawks this season.
Kansas has also seen encouraging developments at tight end. Leipold praised Carson Bruhn after his previous season was cut short by injury while also pointing to Jalen Butler as another player who has emerged during camp.
“I think Jalen Butler's another tight end that has kind of come on the scene that you could see,” Leipold said.
At wide receiver, Leipold mentioned Nahzae Cox, Nik McMillan and Cam Pickett before highlighting the progress of returning receiver Keaton Kubecka.
“Kubecka is playing his best football since he's been a Jayhawk,” Leipold said, pointing to his increased confidence and ability to make plays during camp.
The Jayhawks have also seen several defensive players make progress.
Leipold highlighted defensive backs Christian Pritchett and Corey Gordon, while Taylor Davis has impressed with his development as a communicator and leader in the secondary. Leipold said Davis has also made strides with his physicality during camp.
Kansas' defensive front could have several contributors as well. Leipold praised Blake Herold and Leroy Harris while describing Dak Brinkley as potentially the team's best pure pass rusher. Young defensive lineman Garrett Martin also earned recognition for his motor and potential.
With Kansas nearing the regular season, the coaching staff is beginning to narrow down its rotations and determine which players will earn the most snaps.
Several of the Jayhawks who made an impression during camp could now be positioned for larger roles once the season begins.
