Leroy Harris Emerging as One of the Power 4's Top Defensive Linemen
Kansas defensive end Leroy Harris III is quickly becoming one of the most important players on the Jayhawks' defense, and his production has him among the top defensive linemen in the Power 4 this season.
Through the first four games, Harris has been one of the most active players on Kansas' defensive front. He entered the season coming off an impressive 2025 campaign in which he recorded 31 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. That performance earned him honorable mention All-Big 12 honors. Kansas Athletics lists Harris as a 6-foot-5 defensive end who has continued to develop into a major part of the Jayhawks' defense.
Harris' early production has been impressive. Before Kansas' matchup with Middle Tennessee, he had recorded 15 tackles, six tackles for loss, two pass breakups, two forced fumbles, one sack and a blocked kick. Kansas Athletics called him a "menace" early in the season because of his ability to make plays in different areas of the defense.
Those numbers have put Harris near the top of the Power 4 statistical rankings. A current Power 4 defensive statistics database has Harris ranked 12th among players in tackles for loss with six through the early part of the season. That places him among some of the biggest names in college football, including Texas' Colin Simmons and LSU's Princewill Umanmielen.
Harris also continued making an impact during Kansas' 55-0 victory over Middle Tennessee. He finished with three tackles, one tackle for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup. The performance was another example of how he can affect a game without needing to record a sack. Kansas' official box score shows Harris was one of the Jayhawks' defensive leaders in the shutout.
The fumble recovery was especially important because it came during a dominant defensive performance. Kansas held Middle Tennessee to only 136 yards of total offense, marking the fewest yards the Jayhawks have allowed during Lance Leipold's tenure. The defense also recorded the program's first shutout since 2008.

Harris' ability to create pressure, stop the run and force turnovers gives Kansas another playmaker to rely on as Big 12 play begins. His performance will become even more important with Kansas traveling to Utah next Saturday.
The Jayhawks will face a much tougher test against the Utes, but Harris has already shown that he can be one of the most disruptive players on the field.
If Harris continues producing at this level, he could finish the season as one of the most productive defensive linemen in the Power 4 and become an even bigger name for Kansas moving forward.
