No. 14 Kansas begins postseason play Thursday night with a tough quarterfinal matchup against TCU in the Big 12 Tournament at T-Mobile Center. The Jayhawks earned the No. 3 seed after finishing the regular season 22-9 (12-6 Big 12) and received a double-bye into the quarterfinal round.
Kansas enters the matchup coming off a 104-85 victory over rival Kansas State on Senior Day, while the Horned Frogs advanced after defeating Oklahoma State 95-88 on Wednesday night. TCU (22-10) arrives as one of the hottest teams in the conference, having won nine of its last 10 games since early February.
The two teams met earlier this season in Lawrence, where Kansas escaped with an overtime comeback victory. Thursday’s game presents a different challenge, as TCU has found its rhythm late in the season.
The Horned Frogs have built their recent surge on physical play and defense. TCU ranks among the national leaders in forcing turnovers and generating extra possessions through offensive rebounding. The Horned Frogs also attack the basket frequently, ranking near the top of the country in free-throw attempts.
Forward David Punch leads the way for TCU, averaging 13.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Punch, along with forward Xavier Edmonds, forms a productive frontcourt duo that combines for nearly 27 points and more than 13 rebounds per game.
Kansas counters with one of the nation’s best defenses. The Jayhawks lead the Big 12 in field goal percentage defense (38.7%) and blocked shots (5.9 per game), anchored by sophomore center Flory Bidunga. The Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year averages 13.8 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game while shooting 64.4% from the field.
Freshman guard Darryn Peterson leads Kansas in scoring at 19.9 points per game and has emerged as one of the league’s top offensive weapons. Senior guard Melvin Council Jr., the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, adds experience in the backcourt with 13.4 points per game and 160 assists.
If Kansas can limit turnovers, prevent TCU, protect the paint without fouling more than normal and create second-chance opportunities, the Jayhawks should have an edge. Their defense and interior presence could prove decisive against a Horned Frogs team that struggles with outside shooting.
Prediction: Kansas 72, TCU 65.
