A top recruit's decision for the Jayhawks was reportedly solidified weeks before his public commitment, revealing the true timeline of a pivotal recruitment.

Report: Tyran Stokes Had Kansas Jayhawks Decision Locked in Weeks Before Commitment

For months, the recruitment of the No. 1 player in the 2026 class felt like a back-and-forth battle between Kansas and Kentucky Wildcats. But if a new report is to be believed, the outcome may have been decided long before the public announcement.

Stokes officially committed to Kansas on April 28 during ESPN’s Inside the NBA broadcast. However, according to Kentucky Sports Radio reporter Jack Pilgrim, Stokes may have internally made that decision weeks earlier.

The report suggests Stokes signed his non-revenue-sharing deal with Kansas around the same time as his mid-April unofficial visit to Kentucky, roughly two weeks before his commitment went public. If true, it would indicate that much of the late-stage drama surrounding his recruitment was more perception than reality.

At the time, Stokes’ visit to Lexington created real concern among Kansas fans that the Wildcats could flip his decision. Instead, once he left campus without committing, momentum quickly swung back toward KU.

Whether Stokes truly had his mind made up during that visit remains unclear. But in the end, head coach Bill Self and the Jayhawks landed their top target, and possibly knew it before anyone else did.

BREAKING: Tyran Stokes Commits to Kansas

The recruitment of five-star forward and No. 1 recruit Tyran Stokes is officially over. Stokes announced his commitment to Kansas on Tuesday during Inside the NBA on ESPN, choosing KU over the Kentucky Wildcats and ending one of the most closely followed recruitments in the 2026 class.

The No. 1 overall prospect brings elite versatility to the Kansas men's basketball program. At 6-foot-7, Stokes can score at all three levels, facilitate offense and defend multiple positions, making him a potential immediate-impact player in Lawrence.

Head coach Bill Self adds another cornerstone piece as Kansas continues to build toward the future with one of the top recruiting hauls in the country.

With Stokes now in the program, the Jayhawks land a program-changing talent and a centerpiece for the 2026 class.

Tyran Stokes Down to Kansas or Kentucky, Decision Coming Tonight

The wait is finally over. Five-star forward Tyran Stokes will announce his college decision tonight, choosing between Kansas and Kentucky. The No. 1 player in the 2026 class is expected to reveal his pick around 5:30 p.m. CT on Inside the NBA.

For weeks, this recruitment has felt like a two-team race, and now it officially is. Oregon is out, leaving Bill Self and the Jayhawks battling John Calipari and the Wildcats for one of the most coveted prospects in the country.

Stokes, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward out of Rainier Beach (WA), has everything you want in a one-and-done star. He’s physical, explosive, can score at the rim, and makes plays for others. Simply put, he’s a program-changer.

Kansas has long been viewed as the team to beat. There’s strong confidence around the Jayhawks, fueled by his relationship with assistant Kurtis Townsend and consistent buzz from recruiting insiders.

That said, Kentucky isn’t going away quietly. The Wildcats have pushed hard, hosting multiple visits and leaning into strong connections around Stokes, along with their Nike backing.
