The Kansas Jayhawks signed Tyran Stokes, the nation's No. 1 basketball recruit
The Kansas Jayhawks program and the fan base let out a huge sigh of relief earlier this week.
It was after they heard the news of No. 1 recruit Tyran Stokes deciding to play at KU next season. It marks the second straight year of landing the nation's top player. Last year it was Darryn Peterson, who recently declared for the NBA Draft and the expected No. 1 pick in June.
Roundtable Sports writer Liam Carson recently spoke about the news on the latest Sunflower Showdown podcast.
"Now, it will be Tyran Stokes' team this year," Carson said. "I'm really excited to see what he can do. I think KU is using a lot of their NIL money on him, but I think it's worth it. He's really a good player. If you haven't gotten a chance to watch his highlights, I'd really recommend it."
The electrifying Stokes is coming off leading Seattle Ranier Beach to the state title. He had a season-high 63-point game earlier this season. Stokes chose the Jayhawks over the Kentucky Wildcass.
'He's 6-7, can really get to the rim, a really good slasher," Carson said. "He can also shoot if he needs to, good defender. He's the full deal. I think Kansas fans should be very pleased with the addition of him. It was a long recruiting process but it's finally over. Tyran Stokes is officially a Jayhawk."
Stokes is the reason the KU was so inactive during the transfer portal because it was awaiting his decision. The Jayhawks also got a commitment from Charleston center Christian Reeves, who had previous stops with the Duke Blue Devils and Clemson Tigers.
He will compete with Paul Mbiya, who recently announced he was remaining in Lawrence.
"I think he'll compete with Mbiya, who announced he's coming back, for that fifth spot," Carson said. "The roster is really coming together. They've filled now 10 spots with the Stokes commitment, still five more spots on the roster. Maybe they can pick up a little more size and maybe one more player with a little scoring ability."
