Despite landing top recruit Tyran Stokes, the Jayhawks face scrutiny over underwhelming portal additions and a potential NIL spending gap that threatens to leave Bill Self’s roster thin.
The Field of 68 Names Kansas Jayhawks ‘Offseason Loser’ in Rob Dauster Portal Rankings
Kansas landed the biggest prize of the cycle in Tyran Stokes, but not everyone is sold on the rest of the offseason.
Analysts from the Field of 68 podcast grouped Kansas with other blue bloods as one of the biggest “offseason losers,” pointing to concerns about roster construction beyond the headline addition.
“Kansas got Stokes, but if you look at what they got out of the portal… it is not what you would expect a Kansas roster to be,” said Rob Dauster.
Portal Questions
Head coach Bill Self added transfers like Leroy Blyden Jr., Keanu Dawes, and Christian Reeves, but none were considered top-tier portal targets. While each brings upside, the group lacks the star power Kansas has leaned on in past years.
That has led to questions about whether KU did enough to surround Stokes with proven high-level talent.
NIL Spending Concerns
Another major factor is Name, Image, and Likeness spending. According to Jeff Goodman, Kansas may not be keeping pace financially with other top programs.
“Kansas obviously got the prize of the freshman class, but besides that… they’re not in that $20+ million range,” Goodman said, referencing the growing gap between elite spenders and the rest of the field.
Roster Depth Issues
Beyond NIL, depth remains a concern. Kansas lost multiple starters from last season and, as it stands, has limited proven bench production. The frontcourt, in particular, still carries some uncertainty despite multiple additions.
Big Picture
There’s still time for Kansas to change the narrative with another key addition or two. But for now, despite landing the No. 1 recruit, the Jayhawks are being viewed by some as a step behind the nation’s top offseason performers.

Kansas Baseball Falls to Creighton 9-8 in 13 Innings, Win Streak Snapped
Kansas dropped a marathon midweek matchup Tuesday night, falling 9-8 to Creighton in 13 innings at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
The loss snapped the Jayhawks’ 10-game winning streak despite an explosive start at the plate. Kansas built an early lead with three runs in the second inning and four more in the fourth, later adding a solo home run in the sixth to go up 8-6.
Josh Dykhoff led the offense with his 11th home run of the season, while Cade Baldridge recorded three hits for his 23rd multi-hit game of the year.
Creighton battled back to tie the game at 8-8 in the seventh inning, and both teams went quiet offensively down the stretch. Kansas had opportunities late but could not push across a run over the final seven innings.
After escaping threats in the 11th and 12th, the Jayhawks couldn’t hold on in the 13th, as Creighton’s Ben North delivered a walk-off solo home run to end the nearly five-hour game.
Kansas used eight pitchers in the contest, with multiple relievers turning in scoreless outings to keep the game within reach.
Despite the setback, the Jayhawks sit at 37-12 on the season and will return home to face No. 15 West Virginia in their final regular-season series.
