Trey Kaufman-Renn Joins the Kansas Jayhawks
The Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball team made another significant addition to its roster Monday, officially signing former Purdue forward Trey Kaufman-Renn for the 2026-27 season. The move gives head coach Bill Self another experienced player as Kansas prepares for the upcoming season and looks to compete for a national championship.
According to the official Kansas Athletics announcement, Kaufman-Renn has enrolled in classes and begun practicing with the Jayhawks. The 6-foot-9 forward will fill the roster spot opened by freshman Grant Mordini, who suffered a season-ending patellar tendon injury.
Kaufman-Renn brings an impressive résumé from his time with the Boilermakers. During the 2025-26 season, he averaged 14.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 57.8% from the field. He also recorded 11 double-doubles, demonstrating his ability to contribute as both a scorer and rebounder.
His production could immediately help Kansas strengthen its frontcourt. The Jayhawks will have another dependable scoring option around the basket, along with a player capable of creating second-chance opportunities through offensive rebounding. His passing ability also gives Self another forward who can help facilitate the offense.
The addition is particularly important because Kaufman-Renn has extensive experience competing against high-level competition. During his Purdue career, he helped the Boilermakers reach the national championship game, the Elite Eight and the Sweet Sixteen. He was also named first-team All-Big Ten in 2025.
As reported by CBS Sports, Kaufman-Renn secured an opportunity to return to college basketball while pursuing an additional year of eligibility. He was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 59th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft but had not signed a professional playing contract.
Self believes Kaufman-Renn's basketball intelligence and experience should help him adjust quickly despite joining the program late in the offseason. That could be especially valuable with the regular season approaching.
The biggest question now is how Kansas will use its newest addition alongside forwards such as Tre White, Keanu Dawes and freshman Tyran Stokes. Kaufman-Renn has experience playing both power forward and center, potentially giving Self flexibility with different lineups.
For Kansas, this signing provides proven production, rebounding and veteran leadership. If Kaufman-Renn transitions smoothly, he could become an important piece of the Jayhawks' rotation and strengthen their chances of making a deep NCAA Tournament run.
