Tre White’s Return Gives Kansas Basketball Another Experienced Piece
Kansas basketball made its biggest roster announcement of the offseason Friday when the program took to social media to officially announce that Tre White is returning to the Jayhawks for the 2026-27 season.
The announcement came just two days after White was granted a preliminary injunction that gave him another year of college eligibility. Kansas confirmed his return with a simple social media post featuring the message, “He’s back.”
White’s return gives head coach Bill Self another experienced player who already understands the program and what is expected at Kansas.
The 6-foot-7 guard had an impressive first season in Lawrence. White started all 35 games during the 2025-26 season and averaged 13.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. He also shot 40% from three-point range, giving Kansas another player capable of stretching the floor.
Self believes White can bring even more than his production on the court.
“Tre received a TRO and is eligible to come to campus and practice, and hopefully play in games,” Self said. “He’s had a great offseason and performed well with the Miami (Heat) and had a very successful summer league.”
White spent part of the summer with the Miami Heat organization after signing an Exhibit 10 contract and also played in the NBA Summer League. His decision to return to college gives Kansas a player who has continued developing even after his college season ended.
For Kansas, the biggest impact could come from the combination of experience, scoring and versatility.
The Jayhawks will have several new pieces on the roster, making White’s familiarity with Self’s system valuable. He already knows how Kansas wants to play and has experience playing alongside some of the players returning from last season.
White can also provide Kansas with another scoring option. His ability to attack the basket, rebound and shoot from outside gives Self flexibility when building different lineups.
“Last year he averaged 14 points and seven rebounds in a really good league,” Self said. “He brings experience, but he also brings talent, leadership, depth, and competition in practice every day.”
White’s return also adds another layer to Kansas’ depth. Instead of entering the season relying almost entirely on newcomers to fill major roles, Self now has a proven contributor returning to the roster.
Kansas will still have plenty to figure out before the season begins, including how White fits alongside the team’s other returning players and newcomers. However, his return gives the Jayhawks another experienced option as they prepare for the 2026-27 season.
After weeks of uncertainty, Kansas finally has its answer.
Tre White is coming back to Lawrence, and his return gives Self another proven piece to build around.
