Leroy Harris and David Santiago Rank Among Nation’s Top Defensive Ends

The Kansas Jayhawks are receiving national recognition for their defensive line, as Leroy Harris III and David Santiago have established themselves among the highest-ranked defensive ends in the country, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).

Harris ranks No. 2 nationally, while Santiago sits at No. 3, giving Kansas two of the top three defensive ends in college football. Their performances have been a major part of the Jayhawks’ defensive success during the 2026 season, showcasing the talent and depth defensive coordinator D.K. McDonald has available along the defensive front.

Harris has emerged as one of the most impactful defenders on the Kansas roster. Through the first four games, the junior recorded 18 tackles, seven tackles for loss, one sack, three forced fumbles and a blocked kick. His ability to disrupt opposing offenses has made him a player offensive coordinators must account for when preparing to face the Jayhawks.

According to 247Sports, Harris has also developed into an important leader for the defense. His production goes beyond bringing down ball carriers, as he has consistently created turnovers and helped set the standard for his teammates.

Head coach Lance Leipold has praised Harris for his continued development, noting that the defensive end keeps finding ways to make an impact. Harris has also embraced a leadership role, helping younger players and transfers adjust to the program while establishing expectations during practice.

Santiago has provided another important presence on the defensive line. The redshirt junior joined Kansas after playing at Michigan State and Air Force, bringing experience from multiple college programs. His versatility and ability to contribute against both the run and pass have helped strengthen the Jayhawks’ defensive front.

According to the official Kansas Athletics roster, Santiago recorded a sack, two tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery against Utah. Those contributions demonstrate how he can affect games in multiple ways rather than relying solely on quarterback pressures.

Having Harris and Santiago ranked among the nation's best defensive ends gives Kansas a significant advantage heading into the remainder of its schedule. Opposing offenses must prepare for two disruptive players who can pressure quarterbacks, stop running plays and force turnovers.

The Jayhawks' defensive success has also extended beyond the defensive line, with the unit establishing itself among the Big 12's better defenses early in the season. Continued production from Harris and Santiago could be crucial as Kansas looks to improve its conference standing.
