After some positive momentum last week, the LSU Tigers offense puts together one of their worst performances in years as the Tigers fall 24-19 to the Ole Miss Rebels.
Brian Kelly, Joe Sloan, Garrett Nussmeier and even Blake Baker took their lumps in this one and will continue to receive them in the discussion of this massively disappointing performance from LSU.
The craziest part of this game was watching Nussmeier and the discussion around him around the fan base.
The No. 18 recepient simply doesn't look like the same player that fans had come to know and love. He was 21-of-34 for 197 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
With no effective running game, the quarterback was called to throw on it a bunch again. The play calling didn't look great, but it's hard to know what was open to them with Nussmeier on the field.
It was revealed a few weeks ago that he was dealing with a torso injury that was suffered during fall camp. He's been healthy enough to play, but something has looked wrong the entire time.
This game, the frustration around the offense reached a new level.
After the fan-favorite quarterback under threw a wide-open Chris Hilton Jr., keeping them from what would have been a touchdown, cries rang out of LSU to change quarterbacks.
Michael Van Buren is the backup and has some mobility to his game. If anything, it would have been nice to see what the offense could have looked like with a healthy passer for the Tigers.
That change never came.
The LSU run game was non-existent yet again as well. Nothing was working until Harlem Berry had a nice couple of runs very late to pick up a touchdown.
It's hard to get a struggling passing game going if there is zero help from the rushing attack.
The normally stout LSU defense had some issues in this one, but it wasn't really all their fault.
Trinidad Chambliss wasn't efficient. He completed 23 of his 39 passes on the day. When they did connect, though, they hurt. He finished with 314 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He did pick up 13 carries for 71 yards on the ground before he started kneeling it out, though
Kewan Lacy had a couple of big runs, but they had held him to under four yards a carry for most of the game. He finished with 87 yards and a score on 23 carries.
The Tigers defense still looked good overall on the day. It's hard to hold too much against them when they got zero help from the offense. They were on the field all day.
