One thing that is undeniable about this LSU Tigers team is the dominance of the offense. The bats carried the team to a 14-7 victory over the Indiana Hooseirs on Friday afternoon to kick off the Live Like Lou Jax College Baseball Classic.
The Tigers were potentially looking at their first loss of the season, down by one run heading into the eighth inning. They then exploded for nine runs in that frame to secure the victory. LSU now improves to 6-0 on the year.
The player of the game has to be none other than Zach Yorke. The first baseman's big bat has lived up to expectations so far. His third home run of the season came today and was a three-run blast that kick-started the big eighth inning and the Tigers' eventual victory.
Yorke finished this game 3-for-5 with a home run, a walk drawn, and a team-leading four RBI. He's hitting .412 to start the year, and it barely feels worth mentioning because of how well the team is doing overall.
Not a single LSU starter in this game is batting below .300 right now. The level at which they are seeing the ball is excellent. The team drew 14 walks in this game; four of them came from Cade Arrambide alone.
The Tigers entered this game with the most runs scored in the SEC, with a lead of nine over the Ole Miss Rebels. That title likely won't change hands after LSU's 14-spot in this game.
They have needed every bit of that offensive production, too, because the pitching has been very inconsistent. The Tigers' team ERA is at 5.63, which is the worst in the conference by a large margin.
The slow start to the year by Casan Evans is something to take note of, but not panic about just yet. He's looked good outside of two bad innings, dragging his overall numbers down. The stuff is still there; he just needs to curb the big inning.
In this game, Evans went five innings, struck out four, gave up four hits, two earned runs (three overall) and walked two. Three hits, both of those walks and all of those runs came in the third.
Gavin Guidry continued his strong start to the year. He picked up the win with another scoreless inning of work, allowing just his second hit of the season.
LSU will face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as the home team at 11 am CT on Saturday.
