The LSU Tigers have landed another good young wide receiver as 2027 three-star WR Gary Burney Jr. flips from the Houston Cougars.
The LSU Tigers remain red-hot on the recruiting trails as they just got another player to flip, this time it was a wide receiver.
Ex-Houston Cougars commit Gary Burney Jr. has been a recent target for the Tigers, and one they found success with as he committed on Sunday, per Hayes Fawcett of Rivals. Burney had visited campus this past weekend and was clearly won over.
The Parkway High School wideout is ranked as a three-star wideout in the 247Sports recruiting rankings, the No. 104 wide receiver and the No. 22 player in Louisiana. It doesn't take much think to figure out what this coaching staff sees in him as a player.
Burney has a large frame at 6-foot-3. He needs to put on some muscle, but he can be a dominant weapon on the outside at that height. Especially in the red zone. To go with that height, he was a track star who had 76 catches for 1,367 yards and 15 touchdowns last season.
George Macdonald has been coaching his position for a long time at a high success rate. One thing he can't teach is height and speed. Burney might be a little bit of a project player, but the potential is clear. This coaching staff is going to continue to go after traits.
This wide receiver room needs depth and developmental players as well. They are pretty much starting over from scratch with just one returnee from last year. The coaching staff brought in a ton of veterans to carry them at the start, but they need to build out depth. Burney is exactly the type of player to have sitting at the bottom of the depth chart for a little bit as he learns.
