Ex-LSU Tigers southpaw Gage Jump is getting the call up to the show, joining the Atheltic's rotation.
The end of Monday night was a dream come true for ex-LSU Tigers southpaw Gage Jump, who got the call that the Athletics would be calling him up for his MLB debut, per ESPN's Jeff Passan.
Jump was always reliable in college and has been the same in his young professional career, so now he gets a chance at the top level. The 23-year-old was drafted with the No. 73 overall pick in the second round of the 2024 MLB draft after a successful two-year stint in the collegiate ranks. They wasted no time getting him through the minor league system.
He started his college career in 2022 with the UCLA Bruins. He only appeared in seven games, but was solid with a 3.86 ERA. Tommy John surgery cost him his 2023 campaign, then he transferred to the Tigers.
In his one year for LSU, he posted a 3.47 ERA over 83.0 innings over work with 101 strikeouts to just 22 walks. It's not hard to see why he didn't waste his time in college any longer than he needed to.
Jump is a toolsy southpaw who can fill up a strike zone with an elite fastball. Every team jumps at the opportunity to add those players early in the draft.
The California native has made 33 professional starts with a 3.58 ERA. He has picked up 56 strikeouts in 38 innings at Triple-A to begin this year, so it's no surprise to see the Athletics' interest get piqued.
Per the latest MLB rankings, Jump was the No. 41 overall prospect in the league. He's the third overall player in the A's farm.
