Ex-LSU Tigers star quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was just taken with the No. 249 overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Though his LSU Tigers career didn't end as planned, quarterback Garrett Nussmeier now sees his dreams come true as he was selected No. 249 overall in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Nussmeier entered last season with hopes of being drafted first overall and winning a Heisman. An unfortunate early oblique injury derailed his senior campaign. After years of waiting for his turn in Baton Rouge and a promising first season as the starter, it was an unceremonious end with regression on the field and a late-year benching.
It began to be tough to watch as he slid down into the seventh round, but he now lands in a good situation where he gets to learn from Patrick Mahomes and under Andy Reid with the Chiefs.
The 24-year-old had built a reputation as a gunslinger with a big arm, who tried to play hero ball a little bit too much. Because of his oblique injury, his approach was massively hindered. He couldn't really throw the ball deep, keeping the offense from generating explosive plays through the air.
Now that he's healing, he was able to put on a show for teams in the Senior Bowl and at the combine. He's starting to look more like himself, which means Kansas City could end up getting a steal with this pick.
Throughout his time with the Tigers, Nussmeier completed 64.0% of his passes for 7,699 yards with 52 touchdowns to 24 interceptions. He actually completed a career-high 67.4% of his passes last season, but that was because of the limited playcalling.
