With 89 days until kickoff for the LSU Tigers, it's time to highlight the next player to don that jersey number in Baton Rouge.
The LSU Tigers football season is inching closer, now down to double digits on the countdown clock. Kickoff against the Clemson Tigers is now just 89 days away.
As we continue to look back at the history of the Bayou Bandits to celebrate and prepare heading into the first game, there is also the matter of getting to know the current-day players.
Here is a look at the important past of No. 89 at LSU:
DL Lavar Edwards (2008-2012)
Edwards was never the star of the Tigers' defensive line, but he played a lot of football and was a key rotational piece of an elite group. He was the complimentary piece next to bigger stars like Sam Montgomery and Barkevious Mingo.
Over four years, Edwards appeared in a whopping 52 games in Baton Rouge. He finished with 96 tackles, 20.0 TFLs and 10.5 sacks. He was drafted in the fourth round in 2013 and bounced around NFL benches for a couple of years before ending his career in the CFL.
TE Billy Truax (1961-1963)
Truax is a member of the LSU Athletics Hall of Fame, despite finishing his career with just 18 catches for 274 yards and two touchdowns. He was a tight end at a time when it was viewed more as an extra offensive lineman than an extra receiver. They would be used in passing plays sometimes, but not often.
Rather than putting up big numbers, Truax did a lot of the dirty work as an elite blocker that led to the runners behind him scoring the touchdowns. He was a team captain on some successful LSU teams and went on to get drafted in the second round of the 1964 NFL draft.
Plays That Went For 89 Yards
2019 - Clyde Edwards vs. Arkansas Razorbacks
Because of how prolific the Tigers' passing offense was, people can sometimes overlook just how important Clyde Edwards-Helaire was to them finishing that season undefeated.
In this game alone, he had six carries for 188 yards and three touchdowns, along with seven catches for 65 more yards. He finished the year with 1,867 scrimmage yards and 17 touchdowns.
2014- Leonard Fournette vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Fournette was a real-life cheat code in college. This game put a major cap on his freshman season. He finished with 11 carries for 143 yards and two touchdowns with 121 kick return yards thanks to a touchdown he brought back. It was special to watch how he could truly end up in the end zone every single time he touched the football. That combination of size and speed is rare.
