With 88 days until kickoff for the LSU Tigers, it's time to highlight the next player to don that jersey number in Baton Rouge.

The LSU Tigers football season is inching closer, now down to double digits on the countdown clock. Kickoff against the Clemson Tigers is now just 88 days away.

As we continue to look back at the history of the Bayou Bandits to celebrate and prepare heading into the first game, there is also the matter of getting to know the current-day players.

Here is a look at the past and present of No. 88 at LSU:

No. 88 - WR Malik Elzy

Elzy comes in as a part of the sweeping changes made to the wide receiver room this offseason. While he might not be considered a favorite to get frequent playing time, given the more high-profile recruits they brought in, the early reports on Elzy have been good and playing time seems to be wide open for whoever can contribute to winning.

The Chicago native signed with the Illinois Fighting Illini out of high school as a four-star prospect. He could have gone to a bigger school with offers from the Auburn Tigers, Oregon Duck, Ole Miss Rebels, Michigan Wolverines and more, instead he opted to stay home.

The 6-foot-2 wideout doesn't have much production to his name through three years in college. He never really found frequent snaps and finished his stint with the Illini with just 16 catches for 213 yards and two scores.

Perhaps Lane Kiffin and Charlie Weis will be able to unlock what the scouts saw coming out of high school. Elzy has prototypical size and should be able to out-physical opposing defensive backs. Even if he doesn't offer top-end speed, he should be able to complement the speedier receivers on the Tigers' roster well.

Highlighting A Former Player Who Wore No. 88

TE Chase Clement (2008-2012)

As with many tight ends of the Les Miles era at LSU, Clement was not very productive in college. He had 14 catches for 189 yards and one touchdown. He was a fantastic blocker, though, and appeared in 53 games throughout his career. He's also a Tigers legacy player with three uncles who played in the NFL: Ruffin Rodrigue Sr., Ruffin Rodrigue Jr. and Eric Andolsek.

DE Gabe Northern (1992-1995)

Northern is one of the most productive defenders in school history. He was a multi-time All-SEC first-team member. He is third all-time in school history with 21 sacks and is both second and fourth for single-season sacks (11.0 in 1994 and 9.0 in 1995).
