Major changes are coming to Baton Rouge as the LSU Tigers have fired head coach Brian Kelly, per LouisianaSports.Net's Matt Moscona.
There has been much unrest around the program after a 5-3 start to the 2025 season, with three embarrassing conference losses.
The visual of empty Death Valley paired with boos and chants of "fire Kelly" after the ugly 49-25 loss to the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday has accelerated these conversations, leaving a bad feeling in the stomachs of many important people in Baton Rouge.
This comes just three-and-a-half years after the school gave the coach a 10-year, $100 million contract. Because of that, the Tigers will still owe Kelly a $52.8 million buyout.
After winning the National Championship in 2019, LSU's football program has been unable to get back to the College Football Playoffs. The hope with bringing in Kelly was that he would be able to get them back there, but he did not.
It was supposed to be a win-win situation. Kelly is the winningest active coach in college football, but wasn't able to take that next step and win a title. LSU is a proven breeding ground for National Championships, but without the right coach to get them back there.
Under Kelly, the Tigers had a 34-14 record. They won a lot of games that they should have, but were rarely able to win the big games that they needed.
This is not a program where being just okay is accepted by anybody.
While things weren't in great shape when he took over, this was year four. A vast majority of players on the roster are his players, his recruits and his decisions. It was also his coaching staff, which has been the subject of much criticism.
Moscona also added that Frank Wilson will serve as the interim head coach.
Wilson is a New Orleans native that was with the school from 2010 to 2015. Kelly brought Wilson back in 2022. He's been a fan and player favorite, which makes him the easiest choice.
Now, LSU will be back on the head coach market in search of someone that can bring them back to the promised land.
