Star LSU Tigers transfer, former Boston Celtics guard RJ Luis, was granted the preliminary injunction he needed to play this season.
The LSU Tigers Men's Basketball team just got the best news they could have hoped for as a local court has granted star RJ Luis the preliminary injunction he needed to be eligible for Will Wade's first roster back in Baton Rouge.
There has been a lot of confusion about eligibility in college athletics this offseason, but Luis was an especially controversial case. Unlike some, he actually hadn't used his four years yet. He did, however, sign a two-way deal with the Utah Jazz before being traded to the Boston Celtics for Georges Niang.
Luis' best case is that he never appeared in a G League game before being waived due to injury. This is a similar case to the football players that the Tigers have added in recent days, who were signed to NFL teams after going undrafted. Former LSU defensive end Jack Pyburn is planning a return if waived, and he is someone with sacks on his preseason resume.
The Tigers are going to be a much better team with Luis on the roster. Wade had done a good job of bringing in other top talent around him to make up for the reality where he wasn't made available, but adding a former Big East Player of the Year is never a bad thing.
Luis helped lead the St. John's Red Storm to the NCAA Tournament back in the 24/25 season. He put up 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game on offense, with a combined 2.0 steals and blocks as a defender.
