Elite recruiter Fitzroy Anthony joins Kim Mulkey's LSU Tigers staff, bringing his elite recruiting skills to Baton Rouge after over a decade with the Miami Hurricanes.
The LSU Tigers have been scrambling to fill assistant coaching vacancies this offseason, with the latest hire being Fitzroy Anthony, the team announced on Monday afternoon.
Anthony will replace Gabe Lazo, who served as Gary Redus's replacement and held the role for just days before becoming the UCF Golden Knights head coach. Redus held a large role in the building, so the Tigers need someone qualified to fill his shoes. Though he wasn't the first hire, Anthony is prepared.
This is a surprising shift for Anthony, who spent 11 years as an assistant coach for the Miami Hurricanes. He had spent four years as the associate head coach. Like Lazo and Redus, Anthony is known for being an elite recruiter.
Chantel Jennings of The Athletic (subscription) had Anthony as No. 2 on a list of women's college basketball assistants who could lead their own programs back in 2024. It's about as high-profile a get as LSU could hope for at this point in the offseason.
There is an infamous clip of former Hurricanes star Destiny Harden giving her head coach a shoutout after making a last-second shot to upset the Indiana Hoosiers in the 2023 NCAA tournament (warning - expletives):
"Fitzroy [Anthony], man. He did it again. He told me to face up and win the (expletive) game, excuse my language," said Harden.
It could hurt some schools to have to make this change right before the portal opens, but the Tigers seem to be in a good spot. Kim Mulkey doesn't expect to see any of her players enter besides Divine Bourrage, so they will just need to fill out talent around what they already have.
