From No. 2 to No. 13: LSU Tigers Baseball tumbles in rankings after a brutal 1-4 week, struggling offensively.
The LSU Tigers had about as bad of a week as they could have last week and it was felt in the most recent rankings update.
D1Baseball released the new Top 25 on Monday morning, and in it, the Tigers fell all the way from No. 2 to No. 13. That's a harsh tumble, but it's hard to say it's not deserved.
Since last week's rankings, LSU went just 1-4 with losses to the Northeastern Huskies, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns and Sacramento State Hornets. Ironically, they were only a -3 in run differential on the week thanks to their only win being 15-4 over the Huskies, but it was still a terrible stretch of games for the offense.
After carrying the best offense and worst pitching staff in the SEC over the start of the season, their bats now rank third-worst in the conference with a .291 team average and the pitching is still last with a 4.31 team ERA.
No one expects this team to be perfect. They did lose a number of key contributors from last year's championship squad, after all. Still, this is not a good sign with SEC play and a trip to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores just a week away.
It took just about a week into April for the team to reach five losses on the season in the two National Championship squads for Jay Johnson. Now, just over a week into March, the Tigers are already 12-5.
Baseball is a weird sport, though. Perhaps it was just a bad week for the hitters. They were dominant for a couple of weeks already and there is plenty of talent there.
Whatever can be done to make sure something like this doesn't happen again, Johnson will be doing it.
