The LSU Tigers did what they needed to on Saturday night against the Texas A&M Aggies, cruising to a 35-6 victory, but they actually fell in the AP Poll due to the outcome of a different game that took place in the SEC.
Over in Gainesville, the Florida Gators torched the Ole Miss Rebels 52-28. The Tigers didn't see a big fall after losing to the Rebels last week because Ole Miss was a top-five team. Now, that loss looks worse in retrospect with the Gators dismantling Pete Golding's squad.
The Rebels were missing some key pieces, but a loss is a loss. LSU being able to manhandle the Aggies in the way that they did helped them from falling even further.
It was a statement day for the offense and Sam Leavitt, who had his mobility limited by an early leg injury. That injury may have actually helped him out, though, as it forced him to slow the operation down and stick in the pocket.
Leavitt wasn't perfect, but he had his best day of the year throwing the ball, without a doubt. He was 17-of-23 for 312 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He delivered the ball well to both Jackson Harris and Winston Watkins Jr., who are both going to be key in helping this offense survive without Trey'Dez Green.
The offensive line also did a better job in this game. William Satterwhite got the start at left guard, but Bo Bordelon also saw some action as well. It will be interesting to watch how that position changes moving forward. As a whole, though, the line allowed just four pressures, per Pro Football Focus.
If the offense can keep performing as they did on Saturday, then this should end up still being a fun year for the Tigers. The defense has left no doubt that they are indeed one of the best units in the entire country.
The injuries are starting to add up for LSU, though. It appears that Trey'Dez Green is on track to return this season, but three Tigers have already been ruled out for the year: Dashawn Spears, Phillip Wright and Charles Ross. The exact severity of Whit Weeks' injury is still uncertain.
It does sting to fall in the rankings after a win, but overall it shouldn't be of any worry to this team. As long as they continue to win games, they will make it to the postseason.
