LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin's Friday visit to Knoxville was partially due to transfer quarterback Sam Leavitt, but he also landed a prized Tennessee Volunteers offensive lineman William Satterwhite in the process.
Satterwhite reportedly signed with the Tigers on Saturday morning, per Pete Nakos, but a tweet from Kiffin suggests that he committed on Friday night.
The Ohio native was a four-star interior offensive lineman from the 2024 recruiting class. The 247Sports composite rankings had him as the No. 211 overall player, No. 12 interior offensive lineman and the 11th-best player from his state.
While Satterfield didn't play much over his two years with the Volunteers, it's clear that there is some untapped potential. Transferring out of Tennessee could both be for more playing time and to find new opportunities as his limited snaps didn't really end up well.
Pro Football Focus has Satterwhite credited with four pressures allowed in 78 career opportunities, which is not ideal. All of his snaps have come at center.
There is a chance that Satterwhite is just a depth add for now with hopes of developing, if Braelin Moore announces his return for next season which is still a real possibility.
No matter where he ends up, Kiffin and LSU simply need bodies for the offensive line right now. That is going to be nearly completely re-tooled from last year, which will excite many Tigers fans. There needed to be change, but it may come with some growing pains.
Carius Curne, Coen Echols, DJ Chester, Tyree Adams, Ory Williams, Khayree Lee and Ethan Calloway all entered the portal. Weston Davis also entered it at one point, but removed his name and will return.
With Satterwhite, the transfer portal class now grows to him and Ja'Quan Sprinkle. They also have incoming freshmen in Brysten Martinez, Ryan Miret and JaKolby Jones. LSU learned this season, though, that you don't want to end up relying on a bunch of first-year players on the offensive line.
There is plenty of work to be done across the line for Kiffin and Co.
