As fans celebrated the LSU Tigers going up 28-3 over the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday night, a scary sight snuck up as star linebacker Whit Weeks had to walk off the field on crutches. He's the third key player lost in the past two games.
Weeks suffered an ankle injury in the third quarter against the Aggies. He walked off the field gingerly and went immediately into the injury tent. He was ruled out for the remainder of the game. It's hard not to imagine that the best-case scenario is still a couple of weeks.
Trey'Dez Green and Dashawn Spears both went down and ended up on crutches against the Ole Miss Rebels. Green was on the luckier end as he could end up returning before the end of the year. Spears, however, is out with an ACL injury. Now, all will be anticipating an update on Weeks.
The senior is wearing the iconic No. 7 jersey for a reason. He is a leader of this team and one of the top linebackers in the country. He has 24 tackles, 2.5 TFLs and a pass breakup on the year after his contributions through the start of this game.
Having both him and TJ Dottery on the second level, along with added pass rush, has completely transformed this defense. Weeks is a great athlete and a well-rounded player. Most of all, he has been a sure tackler. It was one of the holes in his game before this year, but he had maintained a 5.6% missed tackle rate heading into this game.
That's not the only injury concern facing the Tigers from this game, as Sam Leavitt has played through most of the game hurt and Winnie Watkins Jr. was in concussion protocol after a scary hit. As LSU tries to celebrate what looks to be a massive win over a ranked conference opponent who had won the last two meetings, this certainly dampens things.
