Days after being announced as the LSU Tigers’ new assistant coach, Gabe Lazo has been hired by the UCF Golden Knights as their new head coach.

Kim Mulkey and the LSU Tigers are back on the prowl for an assistant coach as the recently added Gabe Lazo has now agreed to become the head coach of the UCF Golden Knights.

Earlier in the week, Lazo was announced as the replacement for Gary Redus. Massive shoes to fill, but fans were excited about the hire. Now the Tigers must scramble again just days before the transfer portal opens.

Lazo is known to be a star recruiter, something that is very much needed after losing Redus to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights job. He had most recently spent two years with the Tennessee Volunteers where he had some success.

Redus is also one of the best modern recruiters. They should both be able to lead their new programs to a lot of quick success if they are given the resources. That’s why Mulkey wanted them on her staff on the first place.

As good of a coach that Mulkey is in her own right, having a top tier assistant coach is also a large part of the recipe to a complete team.

The timing for this change is also brutal, as the transfer portal opens on April 7. The first few weeks are some of the most important and now Mulkey must start over with a new assistant coach.

It’s not like a top tier player, who wants to play for Mulkey, won’t come just because of this. It could come into play, though, so LSU will be working quick to find someone else. They likely had a shortlist of options along with Lazo in the first place.
