Junior LSU Tigers pitcher Gavin Guidry is weighing whether or not he should declare for the MLB draft.
The LSU Tigers have already begun preparations for next year's team and right now, they're waiting to hear about who is staying and who is going.
One of the players with the toughest decisions to make on the entire team is pitcher Gavin Guidry, who feels like the truest toss-up of anyone on the roster in terms of what would be best for the player.
In a recent appearance on Matt Moscona's "After Further Review," Guidry was asked about his line of thinking when it comes to his one year left of eligibility.
"I mean, I love it here. But, for me, like my age, I'm getting older. I think I can pitch in the big league. You know, that's been my dream my entire life. I'll talk with Coach [Jay] Johnson."
The plan was to never get this far in college for the 22-year-old hurler, but last season certainly wasn't in the plans for him either. He posted a 6.39 ERA over 43.2 innings of work with a 1.328 WHIP and 12.2 K/9. That's a small enough sample size, though, to where scouts won't get scared away too easily.
Scouts are more excited about Guidry's intangibles and the raw tools, rather than college production. He's a high-energy reliever out of the pen and racks up strikeouts with ease.
The teams that are in on him as a prospect are in. There isn't much more for him to show in college.
"Honestly, this year was a bonus," said Guidry. "I was draft eligible as a sophomore and I wanted to be here for two years, and then get out of here and move on."
Then it appears that splitting time between pitching and hitting for the first two years of his career made things harder, in terms of splitting preparation time. Then, after finally fully committing to pitching, Guidry then got hurt.
"But also, I've had a lot of conversations with the coach about seeing what we can do money-wise to come back and also chase another dream of winning a third national championship. Because that'll put you in a completely different realm of LSU baseball players," said Guidry. "I definitely don't have all my eggs in one basket yet."
