After weeks of waiting and seeing players enter, the transfer portal has finally opened. It’s a day that Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers have anxiously awaited.

The Tigers are going to have to do a lot of work to rebuild their roster for next year, starting with the most important position on the field: the quarterback.

LSU has just one scholarship player at the position on their roster and it’s someone that most view as a top tier backup in Michael Van Buren Jr.

Kiffin and the Tigers are going to be mentioned along with the top options in the portal until they land one. Now that the portal is open, they can start meeting with these players and coming to deals.

They have already set a pretty big meeting, as they will welcome top transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby after his meeting later this afternoon with the Texas Tech Red Raiders, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel

Sorsby as been mentioned as a favorite to land in Lubbock since he entered the transfer portal, but it’s good to see LSU among is first and possibly only meetings.

He’s going to be among the highest-paid NIL players ever to this point, and it’s clear that the Tigers are ready to go all-in for Kiffin’s first season.

If they do land Sorsby, that would be a massive win. He’s a very talented player and probably the best option available to them, given that he would perfectly fit inside Kiffin’s system.

The Dallas native started his career with the Indiana Hoosiers. He played a little bit as a redshirt freshman, but has started for the past two years with the Cincinnati Bearcats.

He has completed 61.4% of his career passes for 7,208 yards with 60 touchdowns to 18 interceptions. He had 27 touchdown passes to just five interceptions this past year.

Along with clearly being productive through the air, he can run a little bit as well. He has 320 career carries for 1,295 yards and 22 more scores. That’s what sack yardage included.

While he’s considered the best quarterback in the transfer portal, he wasn’t really a lock to be one of the first players taken in the NFL draft. That’s something he’s going to want to change with this final collegiate season.

There are far worse places he could go to accomplish that than the Tigers.

There is already a precedent in place for transfer quarterbacks coming in, producing, winning Heisman trophies and then becoming top draft picks. It happened for both Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels.

Now Kiffin is there and he’s become a bit of a quarterback whisperer. Matthew Corral and Jaxson Dart both made it to the NFL under him and Trinidad Chambliss has taken over the sport this year.

LSU makes perfect sense as a landing spot for Sorsby, meaning fans should pay close attention to his name over the next day or so.
