LSU Tigers star linebacker Whit Weeks was indeed upgraded on the New Orleans Pelicans injury report ahead of their matchup with the Alabama Crimson Tide, but only to doubtful.
It's Wednesday night, which means the SEC releases the first injury reports of the week. Given that both the LSU Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide had a bye last Saturday, this report was highly awaited.
This report was also anticipated because this is the week that star Tigers linebacker Whit Weeks had circled as his target date to get back from injury. There was an update for the LSU star, but it's not exactly what everyone had hoped for. Here is the full injury report for both teams:
LSU
Out
S Dashawn Spears
WR Phillip Wright III
LB Charles Ross II
DL Richard Anderson
Doubtful
LB Whit Weeks
Questionable
LB Zach Weeks
The older Weeks brother did make progress, at least not ruled out immediately, but this isn't a great sign for his status this week. We have seen players be ruled doubtful and then make it to the game, but it shouldn't be the expectation.
The good news is that the Tigers' defense has been able to survive the loss. Davhon Keys has stepped up and played well in his place. The offseason addition of TJ Dottery was even bigger than LSU thought it would be at the time.
That being said, they'd be ecstatic if Weeks were able to make his return. He wears No. 7 for a reason. He offers more in coverage than Keys and Dottery, and that is something they will need to watch out for this week, as that was exploited against the Kentucky Wildcats. This will be an injury to watch until they make a decision on his status.
Alabama
Out
LB Desmond Umeozulu
LB Cayden Jones
DB Nick Sherman
DL Jeremiah Bearman
Doubtful
QB Jett Thomalla
Questionable
RB AK Dear
WR Ryan Coleman-Williams
DB Zabien Brown
RB EJ Crowell
OL Racin Delgatty
OL William Sanders
DL Terrance Green
There are a couple of major Crimson Tide contributors with their status' up in the air for this game as well.
Coleman-Williams burst onto the scene as a freshman and had a down year last season, but is still very talented and actually has essentially the same (very slightly better) per-game numbers so far this campaign as he did in his first.
Brown is the team's best cornerback, but he has taken a slight step back in production. He is allowing a 101.9 NFL passer rating when targeted this year, but he does have two pass breakups. He had five interceptions over his first two seasons, so he can strike at any moment, but doesn't have one as a junior.
Delgatty was their starting center, but missed the last two games. Mal Waldrep Jr. has taken over and hasn't been perfect.
