The LSU Tigers face tough SEC competition. Discover the crucial starting pitchers set to clash in this pivotal weekend series against the Ole Miss Rebels.
The LSU Tigers fumbled away some of their momentum with a midweek loss to Bethune-Cookman, but now have a chance to make people forget about that with a road trip to take on the No. 25-ranked Ole Miss Rebels.
The Tigers and the Rebels are back-to-back in the top 25, but the winner should put some distance between themselves and the other school. If LSU were to lose this series after losing their midweek, they would have ruined all of the goodwill earned with their two conference wins in a row.
Ole Miss' offense has left a lot to be desired, but they have one of the strongest pitching staffs in the SEC. This will probably be the toughest group of pitchers that the Tigers have faced this season.
Here's who will take the mound in starts for their respective teams:
Friday
LSU: RHP Casan Evans
Season Stats: 2-1, 4.97 ERA, 41.2 IP, 50 Ks, 21 BBs
Since his 15-strikeout performance against the Oklahoma Sooners, Evans has dipped a little again. He hasn't been awful, but he's allowed seven runs over his last two outings. He should be able to bounce back against a weaker Revels offense.
Ole Miss: LHP Hunter Elliott
Season Stats: 3-1, 3.79 ERA, 40.1 IP, 60 Ks, 26 BBs
Elliott being a southpaw makes things more complicated for LSU, seeing as though most of their best hitters are lefties. The Ole Miss ace has been a strikeout machine against SEC teams with 30 strikeouts in just four outings.
Saturday
LSU: RHP William Schmidt
Season Stats: 4-2, 2.63 ERA, 41.0 IP, 56 Ks, 14 BBs
Schmidt has been the Tigers' best starter this season and has averaged one earned run allowed over his last three SEC starts.
Ole Miss: RHP Cade Townsend
Season Stats: 2-1, 1.82 ERA, 29.1 IP, 46 Ks, 7 BBs
The team that has had the most success against Townsend this season was the Mississippi State Bulldogs, and they had just five hits and three earned runs. He's been lights out this year, one of the best pitchers in the nation.
Sunday
LSU: RHP Grant Fontenot
Season Stats: 0-0, 1.50 ERA, 12.0 IP, 15 Ks, 7 BBs
Fontenot has had some issues with walks, but has been very good overall. He has been used all over the place this year, now being used as an opener. He has two saves and this will be his second start.
Ole Miss: RHP Taylor Rabe
Season Stats: 3-1, 3.20 ERA, 25.1 IP, 32 Ks, 4 BBs
Rabe is also mostly just an opener, but can go deeper into outings if he's pitching well. He had a season-high 73 pitches in 4.2 innings in his last outing against the Florida Gators.
