The LSU Tigers baseball team added the top players in the transfer portal on Wednesday in former Notre Dame Fighting Irish star Bino Watters.
The LSU Tigers have gone big game hunting in the transfer portal once again, this time in baseball, as they landed the top-ranked player on Wednesday afternoon in Notre Dame Fighting Irish transfer Bino Watters, he announced via social media.
Watters is as bonafide of a bat as the Tigers could have hoped to add to their outfield. He'll slide in as a replacement/answer for the loss of Jake Brown in the corner. LSU put a lot of faith into transfers this season and it failed, but Watters seems like more of a sure thing.
Over two seasons with the Fighting Irish, Watters has slashed .343/.447/.610 with 19 home runs and 90 RBI. He has a solid combination of hit-tool, power and speed. He has eight career stolen bases, so he at least doesn't have cement for feet.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound slugger was named to the ACC All-Freshman team and Freshman All-American last year, and then followed it up by being named to the All-ACC first team this year.
Watters being a left slugger is a big plus, though they would have brought him in no matter what side he hit on with production like that. They are potentially losing big-time lefty bats though in Brown and Derek Curiel, though, so making sure they'll have some balance in their lineup is crucial.
It was clear that Jay Johnson was going to do whatever he could to make sure that this disappointing baseball season didn't happen again in his tenure, which meant they would get aggressive in the transfer portal.
Johnson had also hoped for increased resources with the change in leadership since Verge Ausberry took over, and this is a good sign that he actually is getting those resources.
