Evaluating Performance of LSU Tigers Opening Weekend Rotation cover image

Looking at how the new LSU Tigers weekend rotation performed this past weekend.

The LSU Tigers kicked off the baseball season this past weekend with a series sweep against the Milwaukee Panthers.

There are a lot of changes coming off a championship campaign last year, but the pitching staff was what got hit the hardest by the draft. They are going to need to trust an entirely new starting rotation.

Here's a look at how the opening weekend rotation performed:

RHP Casan Evans

The start from Evans was great until it wasn't. He got through the first three innings fairly clean until he got chased in the third quarter.

The sophomore finished with 3.1 innings pitched, six hits, four earned runs allowed, two walks, and seven strikeouts. Only one of those hits was an extra-base hit, a double, which is a good sign. The timing of them was not.

Evans earned this Friday night role, partially thanks to how strongly he finished last year. He stepped up in big moments and looked elite as a freshman.

Though it wasn't the start he wanted, some missed pitches that came back to haunt him, there's nothing to really worry about yet. Jay Johnson hasn't lost any confidence in his starter. It would be a shock not to see him back on Friday afternoon next weekend.

In the end, LSU still won the game 15-5 in eight innings. A learning opportunity for Evans and a great night for the offense.

RHP Cooper Moore

Moore, a transfer from the Kansas Jayhawks, put on a stellar performance in his Tigers debut. He went six innings, allowed four hits, one earned run, no walks and fanned 11.

He filled up the strike zone, throwing 61 of his 76 pitches for strikes. It was about as clean a debut as could have been asked. He showcased a promising mid-90s two-seamer and a devastating changeup, which he is very confident in. He has five pitches he can throw for strikes.

With the Jayhawks, he was more of a consistent, solid arm. He had a career 3.98 ERA over 44 outings and 14 starts. So far, he has at least shown the capacity to take it up a notch.

This was a very strong start to his LSU career.

RHP William Schmidt

Schmidt is one of the most anticipated Tigers for this season. He’s a boom-or-bust pitcher with sky high potential. He posted a 4.73 ERA as a freshman, but struck out 41 batters in 32.1 innings of work.

The future MLB pitcher started off his sophomore campaign on a similar path. He pitched four innings, gave up three earned runs, walked three batters and struck out nine.

Schmidt will likely switch between the midweek and weekend rotation this season. He’s still growing, but has flashed ace potential again.
