Once a five-star recruit, Hayden Lowe seeks to rebound from injury. Can he ascend to stardom and anchor the Miami Hurricanes' defensive front?

As All-American Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor face promising NFL futures, the Miami Hurricanes will rely on others to step up, such as Damon Wilson II and Marquise Lightfoot. However, another edge rusher looks to make a comeback after a derailed freshman season in Hayden Lowe. He was a five-star recruit from Oaks Christian High School, a private Christian co-educational institution located in Westlake Village, California. The 19-year-old originally committed to the USC Trojans before flipping to the Hurricanes on Nov. 13, 2024.

Lowe did not appear in any games last season, despite being healthy in the first two weeks against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. Afterwards, he suffered an undisclosed injury and was sidelined for the rest of the year. Despite having to stay put on the sidelines, the redshirt freshman had opportunities to watch Bain Jr. and Mesidor prepare behind the scenes and produce on the field.

After spring training officially opened, defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman shared an update on the former five-star recruit:

ā€œObviously, we had an injury,ā€ he said on Thursday, March 26. ā€œBut he’s been in every meeting. He worked extremely hard in the offseason, understanding the fundamentals, where he’s going to be aligned, what his job is, and where his eyes are supposed to be. Now, he’s done some walkthrough reps. He’s been in the back and now he gets to go do it against a different color jersey. You can see he understands where to be. He understands what to do. Now, it’s just doing it full speed and he’ll continue to get better this spring, this summer, and fall camp will be huge for his reps as he continues to compete. That’s the best thing about having who we have on offense. We go against some of the best players every single day. That’s just going to make our guys force our guys to get better fast.ā€

In high school, Lowe recorded 159 total tackles, 88 solos and 71 assists, 42 tackles for loss, 24.5 sacks, 29 hurries, and two interceptions in 37 total games over four seasons. The talent is known, but showcasing it on the field at the collegiate level remains a work in progress. He will likely play in a reserve role to start the season, which will help him regain a rhythm on the field.

The Hurricanes’ defensive turnaround played a tremendous role in reaching the National Championship. Lowe has an opportunity to help keep the trajectory moving forward, potentially better.
