From a football title appearance to a historic basketball turnaround, the Miami Hurricanes dominated the headlines. Discover how Coral Gables’ triple-threat success stacks up against the nation’s elite.
MIAMI, Fla. – The University of Miami had a remarkable year across multiple college sports. Despite a cut-short NCAA Tournament appearance, the baseball program recorded its highest win total – 39 – since the 2022-23 season. In men’s basketball, first-time head coach Jai Lucas delivered a historic turnaround, going from 7-24 to 26-9 with him leading from the sidelines. Finally – arguably the most remarkable – the football program reached the National Championship game for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
The Hurricanes are winning again. However, where does the recent turn of events rank on the college sports scale? On Tuesday morning, CBS Sports ranked which schools had the best year. Despite historic milestones across three sports, the University of Miami finished at No. 10.
CBS Sports used a scoring system that factored in several sports, including football, men's and women’s basketball, baseball, softball (doesn’t exist for the Hurricanes), and volleyball.
The formula: (0.3 × (regular-season win percentage × 100)) + (0.7 × postseason score). That means 30% of a team's score came from regular-season success, while 70% came from postseason performance. Conference tournament results weren’t included. Postseason scoring was tiered based on advancement.
- Bowl eligible/NCAA Tournament appearance -- 20 points
- Bowl win/Round of 32/Regional Finals -- 30 points
- CFP appearance/Sweet 16/Super Regionals -- 45 points
- CFP quarterfinals/Elite Eight/CWS -- 60 points
- CFP semifinals/Final Four/CWS semifinals -- 75 points
- National runner-up -- 90 points
- National champion -- 100 points
The University of Miami scored 45.86 – well above Florida and Florida State.
Given the Hurricanes’ latest success, especially across three major sports, the season became an establishment of contention. Although no hardwood was delivered, championships are the standard – as they were during each program’s peak.
As a new college sports year approaches, starting with fall camp for football, Mario Cristobal, J.D. Areteaga, and Lucas are expected to deliver big. The Hurricanes are already one of the biggest brands, but the winning aspect had been lost for slightly over two decades. However, optimism has been established around the Coral Gables campus.
The Hurricanes are legitimate National Championship contenders in football – expected to win the Atlantic Coast Conference for the first time in program history. In men’s basketball, the team is looking to overcome a tough schedule and emerge as dark horses. Finally, on the baseball field, Omaha remains the goal.
After a big year in college sports, the University of Miami expects another one.
