With Darian Mensah under center, dynamic playmakers Malachi Toney and Cooper Barkate ignite a high-octane Miami Hurricanes offense poised to dominate the ACC and chase a national title.
MIAMI, Fla. – In football, regardless of level, a wide receiver’s best friend is essentially its quarterback. Having a pristine connection on the field results in efficient offense and team success on the scoreboard.
Following the footsteps of Cam Ward and Carson Beck, Darian Mensah joins the Miami Hurricanes with a revamped wide receiver core. The center of attention is directed towards Liberty City native and rising star Malachi Toney. Coming off a historic freshman season, he’s only looking to take things up a notch.
Toney led the nation with 109 catches for 1,211 yards, scoring 13 total touchdowns – receiving, rushing, and passing. Alongside him is Duke transfer Cooper Barkate. After delivering the Blue Devils program its first ACC Championship in football since 1989, he followed Mensah – transferring to the Coral Gables campus.
Barkate caught 72 passes for 1,106 yards, scoring seven touchdowns on the way. The established chemistry with Mensah is expected to carry over to “The U.”
Given the amount of talent from quarterback to the two 1,000-yard wide receivers, it ranks among On3’s top-10 duos ahead of the 2026 college football regular season.
Toney didn’t have the best quarterback situation as a 17-year-old reclassified freshman. Beck joined the Hurricanes recovering from a torn UCL injury. Despite dealing with certain limitations, Toney managed to connect with him consistently last year.
Times will be different ahead of a sophomore campaign.
Toney had a healthy quarterback for spring practices – the connection is expected to grow in fall camp leading to the regular season.
Meanwhile, Mensah and Barkate have done something together the Hurricanes have never done: win an ACC title. They’ve connected on several explosive and deep plays, which makes them a lethal threat.
Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Shannon Dawson will have the opportunity to carve out creative schemes.
Alongside Toney and Barkate in the wide receiver room are Joshua Moore, South Carolina transfer Vandrevius Jacobs, Daylyn Upshaw, West Virginia transfer Cam Vaughn, and freshman Somourian Wingo.
The Hurricanes’ offense could build up to be among the nation’s best and most explosive.
Barkate and Toney likely won’t get the same number of targets as last season, but they will have opportunities to impact winning on a high level.
There are National Championship aspirations established among the Coral Gables program. If the Hurricanes are to return to the big stage, Toney and Barkate will have to punch the end zone.
Mensah has the luxury of targeting two high-quality wide receivers – helping to deliver hardwood.
