Boasting a top-ranked offense and relentless defense, Mario Cristobal’s deepest squad yet eyes an ACC title and a historic return to National Championship contention in Coral Gables.
MIAMI, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes might have one of the most well-balanced rosters in college football.
Whether it’s the offense or defense, both units are stacked with undeniable talent. This is likely the best roster Mario Cristobal has assembled since becoming the program’s head coach ahead of the 2022 season. According to On3, the Hurricanes' offense and defense rank among the top 10 nationally.

The Hurricanes landed a top-market quarterback through the transfer portal for a third consecutive season. Darian Mensah, coming from Duke, is expected to surpass the results of Cam Ward and Carson Beck. Last season, he led the Blue Devils program to its first ACC football title since 1989. Meanwhile, Mensah led the conference with 3,973 passing yards and 34 touchdowns. The success from Durham, North Carolina, is expected to translate to South Florida.
Mensah will have several prolific targets around the field. The Hurricanes’ wide receiver room consists of Malachi Toney and Cooper Barkate, both of whom were the only ACC playmakers to finish the season with over 1,100 yards. Alongside them are Joshua Moore, South Carolina transfer Vandrevius Jacobs, Daylyn Upshaw, and West Virginia transfer Cam Vaughn.
The Hurricanes might have one of the most explosive offenses in the nation. Plus, the backfield will feature the same supporting cast as last season, including local star Mark Fletcher Jr.
Defensively, the rankings suggest that the Hurricanes will take a step back. The losses of edge rushers Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr. are significant, but nothing Mario Cristobal wasn’t prepared for. Marquise Lightfoot, Missouri transfer Damon Wilson II, and Hayden Lowe will look to fill the voids.
Last season, disruption came from the edges, but this year it could be the interior. The Hurricanes retained defensive tackles Ahmad Moten Sr. and Justin Scott. Both are expected to take another step in production.
Plus, the secondary is poised for several breakouts. Bryce Fitzgerald hinted at a position change from safety to nickelback. Along with Romanas “OJ” Frederique Jr., Xavier Lucas, Boston College transfer Omar Thornton, Zechariah Poyser, and Damari Brown.
Regardless of departures on either unit, the Hurricanes have the talent to compete among the nation’s best. For the first time in 20 years, there are National Championship aspirations surrounding the Coral Gables program. Winning the ACC is the start, but the main goal is to claim the big prize.
