A staggering $6.5 million NIL package propels the Miami Hurricanes' newest quarterback into a financial stratosphere that outpaces LeBron James’ future veteran salary, signaling a massive shift in collegiate power.
MIAMI, Fla. – It’s no secret that college athletes get paid similarly, if not more, than professional players. The Name, Image, and Likeness compensation package (NIL) has taken a life of its own, especially on the football side. It’s enhanced the transfer portal to act as player empowerment and free agency.
While some football programs struggle to keep up, the Miami Hurricanes are nothing short of resourceful. In three consecutive years, Mario Cristobal landed top-market quarterbacks – Cam Ward, Carson Beck, and Darian Mensah – through NIL and the transfer portal. The strategy has led to significant success, including a historic run to the National Championship game.
Regardless of narratives and “tampering” accusations, the Hurricanes haven’t crossed the NCAA lines.
Mensah’s NIL package is estimated at $6.5 million, according to On3. It’s worth noting that the “salaries” that college players are paid are severely private. However, the deal is reportedly more expensive than Oregon’s Dante Moore, Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith, and Ole Miss’ Trinidad Chambliss.
The more interesting aspect of it is that Mensah is apparently earning more than LeBron James will for the NBA 2026-27 season. He announced on Friday the highly anticipated decision: signing with the Philadelphia 76ers. James and Klutch Sports agent Rich Paul agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract, including a player option for the 2027-28 season. The 41-year-old stated in a thread of posts on X that this wasn’t a financial decision, but rather about winning.
“This is my last decision,” he said. “I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship. I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time.”

James entered the NBA in 2003, but NIL became official in 2021. It’s shown how much has changed in college sports through time, especially football. Regardless of which franchise James signed with this summer, this type of deal was likely offered across the board.
Along with the benefits, Mensah has high expectations upon arriving at the Coral Gables campus – National Championship or bust.
