As Elija Lofton moves into a starting role, the versatile playmaker’s blend of receiver speed and running back power could transform the Miami Hurricanes' offense into an ACC powerhouse.
MIAMI, Fla. – Although the offensive line draws most of the concern, the Miami Hurricanes have an interesting situation at tight end. Last season, Alex Bauman and Elija Lofton split snaps – making the most of limited opportunities to make plays. They combined for 384 receiving yards on 41 catches and scored four touchdowns.
Ahead of the 2026 season, Bauman departs from the program – no extra NCAA eligibility – and Lofton returns as the projected starting tight end. The Las Vegas native has yet to scratch the surface of what he’s truly capable of. Listed at 6-3 and 242 pounds, Lofton has the speed and shiftiness of a wide receiver, plus the power of a running back.
Coming from Bishop Gorman High School, the former four-star recruit showed flashes of being a Power Four full-time starter. In four seasons, he caught 82 passes for 1,893 yards and scored 46 total touchdowns in 36 games. Lofton logged snaps at running back and rushed 27 times for 178 yards. He chose the University of Miami over Texas, Washington, Texas A&M, and Colorado, among other programs.
Lofton was impactful in limited opportunities as a freshman and sophomore, but a jump in production might be in order ahead of a junior campaign. He certainly has the best hands and the most in-game experience among the rest of the position group. Lofton has the frame to be a reliable blocker.
It’s a quality the Hurricanes were missing in the National Championship game. Lofton didn’t play with an injury, which likely occurred in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl against the Ole Miss Rebels. In the fourth quarter, he caught a 15-yard pass but took a hard hit and didn’t play the rest of the game.
Lofton will surely log more snaps, but the number of targets will be another interesting aspect. The Hurricanes revamped the wide receiver core and retained the entire running back cast from last season. Lofton can be an overlooked weapon, but how many plays will offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson carve out for him?
The 21-year-old surely has the talent to become a star and be among the Atlantic Coast Conference’s top tight ends. However, he will need more targets to showcase it. The rest of the Hurricanes’ tight ends room consists of Luka Gilbert, Gavin Mueller, and Israel Briggs.
Lofton has all the intangibles to deliver a significant impact, but only the in-game schemes will truly show how much he’ll be relied upon.
