After showcasing elite rim protection and verticality with the Miami Hurricanes, Ernest Udeh Jr. eyes the professional ranks following a private workout with the Golden State Warriors.
Miami, FL. – The Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball program is gearing up to compete among the best in the nation. Coming off a historic 26-9 turnaround season, coach Jai Lucas successfully revamped the roster. After retaining Shelton Henderson and Dante Allen for sophomore seasons, they landed a couple of top-market transfer portal talents in guard Acaden Lewis and center Somto Cyril.
Coach Lucas made a significant impact as a first-year head coach. Despite excellent leadership on the sidelines, the 37-year-old had the help of a few impactful seniors in guard Tre Donaldson, forward Malik Reneau, and center Ernest Udeh Jr. Each of them finished with career highs, including Atlantic Coast Conference honors. However, the time with the program was short-lived, as they’ve declared for the upcoming NBA Draft.
Despite projections to not be selected within the 60 picks, there will be opportunities for each former Hurricane to reach a franchise’s radar. As a matter of fact, the journey has begun for Udeh Jr. He revealed to have completed a workout with the Golden State Warriors on Instagram.
The 22-year-old averaged 6.7 points on 72.7 percent shooting, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in 33 games for the Hurricanes, all starts. He measured 6-10 3/4 tall, 262 pounds, a 7-4 1/2 feet wingspan, and 9.5 inch hands at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament. Udeh Jr. has shown to be a high-flying lob threat and rim protector. He shares a similar play style to New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson.
The Warriors currently have the No. 11 and 54 picks in the upcoming draft. They have just one two-way slot open, as Malevy Leons and L.J. Cryer hold the other two, but both can be waived at any time. The Warriors need youth and size, which is where Udeh Jr. fits.
Despite offensive limitations, the Orlando native could be viewed as a plug-and-play prospect. An organization that needs size, rim protection, and verticality could show interest.
Udeh Jr. will likely work out with other NBA teams ahead of the draft. He’s played in 122 total collegiate games over four seasons. Despite leaning more towards the older side of a league rookie, Udeh Jr. could show to have ready-now qualities.
The Hurricanes haven’t had a player selected in the NBA Draft since Washington Wizards forward Kyshawn George in 2024. However, the one-year drought could end by June 24, when the second round concludes. A new chapter awaits Udeh Jr.
