A Dallas judge’s ruling strikes down NCAA eligibility restrictions, clearing the way for the former Miami Hurricanes linebacker and dozens of other athletes to rejoin the college ranks.
MIAMI, Fla. – Former Miami Hurricanes linebacker Wesley Bissainthe was granted a temporary restraining order, along with 40 other athletes, by a Dallas judge on Thursday, which prohibits the NCAA, the Southeastern Conference and commissioner Greg Sankey from stopping them from playing another season of college sports.
On Tuesday, the SEC enforced the following policies to prevent professional athletes from returning to college:
- Previously declared for the NFL, NBA, or WNBA Draft, and did not appropriately withdraw.
- Signed a contract with an NFL (or other professional football league), NBA/G-League, or WNBA (affiliate) team or
- Been listed on an NFL (or other professional football league), NBA/G-League, or WNBA (or affiliate) roster.
The Big 10 Conference was the first to take action, then the Big 12 and ACC followed. However, local courts appear to overrule the policies.
Bissainthe was a four-star recruit from the 2022 Miami Central High School graduating class. He committed and enrolled at the University of Miami, choosing to stay home over Florida, Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Nebraska, Oregon, and Texas, among several other Power Four scholarship offers. Bissanthe played an immediate key role on the Hurricanes’ defense.
In 2023, as a sophomore, the Miami native first emerged as a full-time starter. As his role increased, so did the production on the field. In 2025, as a senior, Bissainthe finished with new career highs: 71 total tackles, 39 solos and 32 assists, three tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and a 32-yard interception against Stanford in 16 games (15 starts). He was impactful in the Hurricanes’ run to the National Championship game.
Bissainthe couldn’t redshirt to preserve NCAA eligibility; played more than four games each season.
With 115 players on the roster, it’s unclear if the Hurricanes would make way for a potential reunion. The linebacker room is inexperienced, outside of Mohamed Toure, Chase Smith, and Cam Pruitt. However, opportunities could lie ahead for Justin “JJ” Edwards and Jordan Campbell, plus others, to gain more playing time.
Ahead of next week’s season opener, the Coral Gables program parted ways with four players (Conrad Hussey, Hayden Lowe, Jontavius Wyman, and Cam Vaughn). There is room on the roster, but nothing is guaranteed.
Bissainthe could look to enter the transfer portal and explore opportunities elsewhere. However, another season of college football is unlikely to get him drafted.
It’s an unprecedented moment in college sports with little direction for the foreseeable future.
