The Miami Hurricanes eye future star power as four-star QB Israel Abrams schedules a crucial visit, potentially reshaping their quarterback depth.
Despite adding top-market quarterbacks through the transfer portal, starting with Cam Ward, then Carson Beck, and now Darian Mensah, the Miami Hurricanes will eventually have to develop one that can compete in the ACC and potentially the National Championship.
They currently have a couple of promising young prospects in Luke Nickel and Dereon Coleman, but could add more talent with four-star Israel Abrams. It was reported on Friday, Feb. 20, that he scheduled a visit around campus with the program.
Abrams currently attends Montini Catholic High School, a private co-educational college preparatory institution located in Lombard, Illinois. He completed 233 of 340 passes, 68.5 percent, throwing for 4,072 yards and scoring 40 touchdowns, six interceptions, in 14 total games.
The Arlington Heights native displayed the ability to extend plays with his legs, rushing 82 times for 224 yards, 2.7 yards per carry, and scoring 10 touchdowns.
Abrams is listed at 6-4, 187 pounds, currently ranked 46th nationally, third at his position, and second in the state of Illinois for the class of 2027, according to 247Sports Composite.
Numerous programs are recruiting the four-star quarterback, such as the Florida State Seminoles, Auburn Tigers, Purdue Boilermakers, and Kentucky Wildcats, all of whom have scheduled visits as well. The Tennessee Volunteers are in the mix, but no date has been reported.
It may take extra effort for the Hurricanes to secure a commitment from Abrams, given the latest situation of the transfer portal quarterback trend. However, Ward and Beck led the program to new heights in their one-and-done seasons, including a National Championship appearance.
Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Shannon Dawson is recruiting Abrams on behalf of the Hurricanes.
The current high school junior already made unofficial visits with a few programs, including the Volunteers, Boilermakers, Tigers, and Seminoles.
A visit with the Hurricanes could be the difference-maker in catching up in the recruiting race. However, the latest quarterback transparency could be the biggest hurdle needing to overcome.
Mensah has clear aspirations to be a first-round NFL selection and believes the Hurricanes are the program to help him get there. He could be another one-and-done, similar to Ward and Beck, despite having two years of NCAA eligibility left.
If and when they begin to compete with high school recruited quarterbacks, then it could mean a new and different chapter. However, there's no denying that the transfer portal has worked heavily in the Hurricanes' favor.
Abrams will have plenty of time before making a final decision and announcing his commitment.
