Elite four-star safety Kevin Caldwell Jr. nears commitment, with the Miami Hurricanes vying for his game-changing talent. A decision looms.
As the Miami Hurricanes successfully revamped the roster for next season, with hopes of another National Championship chase, high school recruiting remains a top priority. The team looks different every year, especially with players entering the transfer portal at a high rate. However, it allows the program to make bigger moves and others to step up.
It was reported on Friday that four-star safety Kevin Caldwell Jr. has narrowed down his options to five schools: the Hurricanes, Georgia Bulldogs, North Carolina State Wolfpack, Vanderbilt Commodores, and Tennessee Volunteers.
The 17-year-old is set to announce his decision on April 3.
Caldwell currently attends Parkview High School. Despite primarily playing as a safety, the Georgia native has experience on the offensive side of the field as a wide receiver and running back. Caldwell caught 10 passes for 71 yards and rushed 37 times for 264 yards, scoring six touchdowns in 10 games.
On defense, he's recorded 38 total tackles, 20 solos and 18 assists, four tackles for loss, two sacks, and an interception. Also, on special teams, the four-star recruit returned five kicks for 214 yards.
Caldwell is ranked among the top-100 for the class of 2027, top-15 in both as a safety and in the state of Georgia. He's very physical, listed at six feet, 176 pounds, and has great instincts and awareness as a defensive back.
The young safety made an official visit with the Hurricanes on June 12. He was recruited by Zac Etheridge, who is set to join the Arizona Cardinals' coaching staff. Safeties coach Will Harris will likely continue the process on behalf of the program.
Caldwell has not visited the Bulldogs, Wolfpack, or Commodores. He had an unofficial visit with the Volunteers on May 31, 2025, for "Big Oranges BBQ."
The Hurricanes have proven to be successful with developing secondary players, such as Damari Brown, Zechariah Poyser, Xavier Lucas, OJ Frederique, and Bryce Fitzgerald. However, there's no guarantee any of them will remain with the program by the time Caldwell begins his collegiate career.
Regardless, the program has proven to be aggressive with transfer portal acquisitions in the secondary, with Omar Thornton from the Boston College Eagles and Conrad Hussey from the Oregon State Beavers being the latest examples. Before them, it was Keionte Scott from the Auburn Tigers and Jakobe Thomas from the Volunteers, both of whom were contributors to the Hurricanes' National Championship run.
It appears that Caldwell is eyeing a home in Coral Gables, but April 3 will confirm.
